FRANCINE, FIVE YEARS EARLIER.

“Sometimes the roof blows right off the house,” Francine said to Simon as he clutched at her. Simon tugged on the strap of her damp black one-piece, nearly revealing her breast. She tried to hold him against her hip. Sand was working into the creases near her bikini line, under her breasts, between her toes. She’d have raised red bumps later. The lake had already been tossing and stormy, more grey than blue. Clouds churned, and the wind was so powerful she could hardly open her eyes.

“It’s like Kansas or something,” her father said. “I’ve never seen a storm like this in Ontario.”

But the wonder for Francine was that after everything the family had said to each other by then, they were all, somehow, still alive. And she blamed her mother for everything.
